Uttar Pradesh has celebrations schedule for Hindus and Muslims, such is an annual festival held in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh- Sayyed Salal Mela. The Dargah of Hazrat Ghazi Saiyyad Salar Masud at Bahraich is the venue of celebrations. Ghazi baba was a famous eleventh century Islamic saint and soldier. His dargah built by Firoz Shah Tughlaq is a place where Muslims and Hindus come together to pay their reverence together.
Month long urs at cementary is observed annually in May which happens to be month of marriage of Baale Miya (Hazrat Ghazi Saiyyad Salar Masud). The festival is attended by thousands of people from far off places of India.
The Dargah mela of Sayyed Salar Masood Ghazi takes place to symbolize Hindu-Muslim unity and begins on the first Sunday of Hindu month Jyeshtha. The fair attracts large number of devotees from all over the country who come to pay their homage at the tomb of Ghazi. The tomb is situated at the Surya Kund. Centuries ago, a grand statue of Sun God stood there.
It is believed that people taking bath in the water of this Dargah become free of all types of sin diseases. Anaarkali is a place where 1000 years before Hazrat Salaar Gaazi Masood horses halted and drank water before offering his prayers. It is said that since then, the lake hasn’t dried.
Masood Ghazi was born in Ajmer and is believed to have stayed at Satrikh in Barbanki and fought many battles with Hindu kings. Later a tomb was built there in his memory after he was martyred. The tomb was reconstructed by Bandmahar who was an attendee to king Nagarmal. The ritual of Ghazi’s marriage is performed by pilgrims of Rudauli who come with sacred relics called ‘palangpeerhi’.
Women tie silver and golden threads and untie the same after their wishes are fulfilled. Many entertainment programs are held during the feast which last for a month.
